Your 3-day online summit for perfecting key skills, (ethical!) marketing strategy, and self-care

9th-11th January 2023

SCROLL DOWN TO SEE THIS YEAR'S INCREDIBLE SPEAKERS

Being a conference interpreter feels increasingly demanding!

We've emerged from the pandemic, but now have to contend with hybrid meetings, poor sound quality, new tech, reduced demand for interpreters in some sectors (but increased workload in others!), global competition, a push to reduce rates...

You're working hard to stay on top of the changing landscape and new technology, but it's hard to be confident: in the future, in your new skills, in skills you've had to refresh on the fly.

Above all, it's hard to know how to stand out in an increasingly global market, find clients, and be a helpful and collaborative boothmate and colleague.

What you really want is to...

Get clarity about your USP and career goals in the current shifting landscape

Learn more about how to specialise or diversify successfully

Learn simple tools to stay mentally and physically strong for your whole career

Position your business to stand out and make the income you deserve

You can have all these things without spending hours on research or constantly adding more to your plate.

Learn from the experts, get action tips, and start putting proven strategies into action straight away.

TerpSummit is about just that: helping you to compete as a freelancer and thrive in a crowded market (without stabbing others in the back!)

30+ experts over 3 days will teach you strategies to clarify your strengths, improve or refresh vital skills, market yourself ethically, and stay in good physical and mental shape, no matter whether you're a beginner or a seasoned interpreter.

Maybe you're...

Anxious about the current market situation and unsure how to find new clients or negotiate fees assertively

Keen to learn more about different types of interpreting work and ways to refresh or expand your skillset

Unsure how you can have a visible presence on social media and stand out in a crowded market marked by new modes of working

Whatever you're feeling, it's time to get a confidence boost with TerpSummit 2023!

Meet Your Host

Hi! I'm Sophie Llewellyn Smith (aka The Interpreting Coach), a conference interpreter and trainer with a passion for helping fellow interpreters create good habits and continue developing their skills with clarity and purpose. With 20 years' experience as an interpreter trainer and a background in personal fitness coaching and complementary therapies, I have a holistic approach to skills development.

I've created this summit to help you examine your interpreting business in the round, from how you look after your main asset (you!) to how you present yourself to the outside world, with a view to becoming more confident, skilled, and marketable.

The Details

When

TerpSummit 2023 will run from Monday 9th to Wednesday 11th January 2023, with a variety of presentations to choose from each day.

 Where

No surprises here: you can tune in to the summit from the comfort of your home office. Or your living room sofa - pyjamas optional!

Presentations

Interpreters love to speak and interact live, so most of the speakers are very keen to hold live workshops, Q&As, taster sessions etc.

Where there are actual presentations, they will mostly be 20-30 minutes long, with a Q&A section. Nice and short so you can get the information you need, and take action quickly! The presentations will be available for 24 hours afterwards, to encourage you to stop waiting for the right time and take action, along with hundreds of other interpreters.

Community

Not everyone loves Facebook, I know, but it has its uses - especially as I'm already in touch with many of you through my Facebook pages.

You'll have access to a private pop-up group just for summit attendees, where we'll be partying before the summit starts, and talking about useful takeaways once it kicks off. There's already a host of information on there.

Keep an eye out in the Facebook group for short challenges, games, an introduction to the speakers, and more.

Prizes

We'll be holding a prize draw for people who purchase the Interpreters' Toolkit for Success.

Our speakers have generously contributed some amazing prizes, including 1-1 strategy sessions, coaching sessions, and more. The draw will take place on the last day of the summit.

Look out for giveaways in the Facebook group, where you can play bingo for prizes: virtual, edible, or physical!

Looking for on demand access to the materials?

After registering, you can also upgrade to gain access to the Interpreters' Toolkit for Success.

That means you'll have on demand access for 12 months to presentations and any worksheets or slides, premium bonuses from our speakers, and other goodies.

You won't want to miss it!

Why should I spend my precious time on yet another online event?

The coronavirus crisis has led to an explosion in webinars, courses, and workshops for interpreters. The quantity of information has been bewildering at times.

So what makes this event different?

First, this summit was created specifically for interpreters, by an interpreter. This isn't general advice for any creative business out there. Every single presentation is specialised for the type of business you run, making it a whole lot more impactful.

Secondly, this isn't an online version of an AGM or a professional organisation's annual conference. You won't hear presentations about the state of the market, trends in interpreting, numbers of interpreter-days, or the future of the profession in general.

Instead, I have carefully selected speakers and curated a series of presentations, workshops, taster sessions and Q&As that focus on YOU, the interpreter - your business's greatest asset! The idea is for you to work on yourself, by learning how to look after the tools that are essential to your career (your voice, your energy levels, your key skills), and how to keep developing even in difficult circumstances. The overarching aim is to give your confidence a lasting boost - not in a superficial way, but by making sure you have solid foundations for your skills and work - and also help make the interpreting community more ethical and collaborative.

Most importantly, I'm not here to add to your plate. My goal isn't to throw a pile of new strategies and tasks at you, leaving you feeling overwhelmed and like there's no way you can do enough. Instead, I'm here to give you simple, practical, actionable steps to make you more confident, more marketable, more professional, and more resilient.

Here's what previous attendees had to say about TerpSummit

The speakers for sure! What a great selection of speakers, all very knowledgeable and very interesting!  E.

I really appreciate the fact that sessions recordings were available for some time, for those of us who are in conflicting timezones. The sessions and the speakers were great! The facebook group is very helpful too to be in touch with other colleagues. F. P.

I found the fact that the summit targeted interpreters specifically to be extremely exciting. The three “domains” covered during the three days were very inspiring. I was very grateful to have the opportunity to listen to presenters one doesn’t often have the opportunity to listen to and learn from. S. F. d H.

The topics were absolutely wonderful. I liked the FB community a lot for its networking possibilities, and networking itself during the summit was incredible. I got to know very nice and knowledgeable colleagues I wouldn't have met in my life if it weren't for this event. N. G.

the topics were amazing, it was almost impossible to chose between the different ones and everyone had so many insightful and useful things to share! T. S.

I would say it was a combination of the excellent speakers that were invited and the incredible organisation to put all the sessions/conferences in such three compact days. I couldn't have enjoyed more and the tips and connections I have made have made it a really valuable experience. I. F. L.

It was a breath od fresh air. The speakers, the content and the easy-to-use interface were sensational. M. A.

How the content surprised me since there were talks I thought I wouldn't be interested in, but found out I actually needed them.
The way colleagues from all around the world pitched in and weren't afraid of networking. V. L.

I loved the friendly community feel of the summit, which I found to be much less formal than other comparable events, while at the same time being much more useful. The Facebook group was a big part of this friendly feel, and made it feel dynamic as well. I also loved that the approach was really centred on practitioners rather than researchers, and there was a lot of practical advice offered at all of the sessions I attended. J.

Connected me with our global interpreting community, inspired me to keep striving to be the best interpreter I can possibly be and also made me want to look after myself better. R. S.

It boosted and motivated me. After 2020, I needed some external input to put me on the right track again in terms of motivation. I was able to get to know other interpreters from all over the world and I will keep in touch with some of them. S. K.

I got a lot of inspiration and I'm already trying to implement some things, especially for my self-care. Thank you so much for organising such a great event and for making it available for free! 🙂 R. R.

I have enough material for my entire year of CDP 🙂 Now it's time to start implementing all the things that I learned. A. L.

It was an eye-opening experience especially concerning contracts and what to include in them. I expect to graduate as a conference interpreter this spring/summer and I am certain that if I had not watched Judy and Julia's speeches, things such as charging for a recording would not have ended up in my contract. J. v. N.

Made me want to pursue a career in interpreting even more, I enjoyed it so much. Gave me a lot of encouraging tips for practicing. A. W.

The sense of belonging to a truly worldwide group of enthusiastic professionals! Seeing how many people were attending and seeing their greetings in the chats from all over the world while knowing that there was a large number of people still waiting for the recordings too made this feel a wonderful initiative for which there was definitely a need. P. v. E

The momentum, the energy and the atmosphere, beeing there with more than 500 interpreters and high-quality speakers at the same time and chatting with them. All Topics, speakers and organisation were fabulous!! Thank you so much! S. K.

The thanks must go to you, Sophie Llewellyn smith - as we said last night you’re a true catalyst for positive development in our field. Helping an industry so reliant on international travel and in-person services still feel connected in a time of a global pandemic is no easy feat, and you and the team orchestrated the whole event formidably. The topics were chosen excellently, were highly relevant to both the present day and future of our beloved industry and the speakers really brought the content to life.

The next step for me is to process all of the information and insight (so very thankful for the recordings- the toolkit is fab!) and I am more motivated than ever to continue my professional and personal development so we can bounce back from Covid stronger together. L. S.
